Summary
A flaw was found in glibc. An off-by-one buffer overflow and underflow in getcwd() may lead to memory corruption when the size of the buffer is exactly 1.
A local attacker who can control the input buffer and size passed to getcwd() in a setuid program could use this flaw to potentially execute arbitrary code and escalate their privileges on the system. This issue was rated as having Moderate impact because of the prerequisites required for successful exploitation.
To the best of our knowledge, there is no actual setuid exposure to the vulnerable getcwd() usage pattern. Red Hat severity: Moderate — CVSS 7.4 (CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H).
Weakness: CWE-193. Affected Red Hat products: Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8; Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6; Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.
Will not fix / out of support: Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6; Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7. Red Hat fixing advisory: RHSA-2022:0896.
Affected products named by the advisory: Red Hat package: glibc; Red Hat package: compat-glibc.
