Summary
FFmpeg versions 0.6.3 through 8.1.2 contain an infinite loop vulnerability in the RTP/ASF demuxer within libavformat/rtpdec_asf.c that allows remote attackers to cause denial of service by sending a crafted RTP/ASF stream.
The rtp_asf_fix_header function fails to validate a minimum chunksize when iterating over ASF objects, causing the loop pointer to never advance when a chunksize is smaller than the 24-byte minimum ASF object header size, resulting in CPU exhaustion that denies service to legitimate users. A flaw was found in FFmpeg.
This vulnerability occurs because the rtp_asf_fix_header function does not properly validate the size of data chunks, preventing the processing loop from advancing. Successful exploitation leads to CPU exhaustion, causing a Denial of Service (DoS) for legitimate users.
The impact rating reflects that this issue strictly impacts Availability (A:H) with low/no effect on Confidentiality or Integrity. Exploitation requires an active application to ingest and demux a maliciously crafted RTP/ASF media stream; passive files at rest pose no risk.
Successful exploitation results in high CPU consumption that stalls the stream-processing thread or container worker, but it does not cause memory corruption or allow arbitrary code execution.

Mitigation checklist
- To mitigate this issue, restrict network access to applications utilizing FFmpeg for RTP/ASF stream demuxing, ensuring only trusted sources can provide such streams. Implement firewall rules to limit inbound connections to the affected services. This may impact legitimate functionality if trusted sources are inadvertently blocked.
